Play Free Rice, and feed hungry people.

This is a very cool game that helps improve your vocabulary, while reducing world hunger.

Thanks JDH!

  1. my "vocab level" was at 29 when i stopped. i guess it goes to 50. not terrific, but i am quite sure that score is better than the one i got for the "vocab" portion of any standardized test i've taken over the years. it's a wonder i can communicate with people (with any level of intelligence) at all based on previous scores. ;o)

  2. Geez that's addictive!

I've donated 6000 grains of rice (and developed a craving for Chinese food along the way...) and am currently at vocab level 44. I had it up to 48 for a word or two, but then reality kicked in.

    Between 38 and 45 is where I hover, but I'm an English-oholic...

I'm running between 38 and 42. Got tired of playing at 200 grains....

  4. 10000 grains (any idea how much that is?) at level 47...had it up to 48 a few times, but haven't managed to crack 49...
    I'm hopelessly addicted.

  5. Very impressive folks!

GB and Lady are our resident geniuses.

I had it up to 40 but 38 was about my average.

I believe this is the acceptable kind of addiction!

  6. I'm not sure where they're culling their definitions from, and I actively disagree with a few of the "correct" answers, but overall it's very interesting. I get the greatest pleasure out of learning about language, since it really is the window to the universe for our brains. Many of the terms (animacule - a very early term for micro organisms, intifada - an arabic term and a few others) are not commonly used in English these days. Great site.

I got 50 using my computer dictionary. But I was 37-40 with a high of 44.

  10. 49! Wow! I'll have to give it another try to see if I can break 42.

I wonder if the questions are random. or do they re-set to the beginning every time?

  11. I think they're random, but after a while you start seeing the same words pop up more than once....

I have a highly active boredom gene. I just can't stick with this long enough to get it above 42.....(sigh)

  13. Ok, I'm still unable to get past 48, but my buddy Victor hit 50 a COUPLE of times! Grrr.

  14. 50! That is amazing! I tried again this morning and began with a 36, and then slowly recovered to a 40; along way 48 or 42!

I'll try again once I've had my coffee...
