Lions and tigers and bears, oh no! ; * )
Not to worry though, they're all full of hot air!

I love the bouyancy of the balloons as they swirl in the air. That's really beautiful and poetic.

Hi JDH! Welcome to my blog! The video is the best one I've seen on hot air balloning; although, to be honest, I have not seen a lot of them. ; )

I was reading over your likes and I've got to tell you that we have the same tastes in films. The Color Purple was (to me) so powerful, there are at least three moments during the film where I cry. The sheer strength of her sister as she's being forced to leave, and he is throwing stones at her. And she says "you can't keep me from her." That gets me everytime. I get so caught up in the story.

I come from an rich and diverse art background, and I really love your blog. I'll be a regular vistor if you don't mind.

Thanks JDH! Yes, I know exactly what scene you are referring to! The other scene that gets me, is at the end when everyone is reunited at the farm. I find no matter how many times I see an emotional movie like that, I react like I am seeing it for the first time. I was even a mess in LOTR, when everyone kneeled to the hobbits!

I would like to hear more about your art background!

Seriously, I loved the "father/son" like relationship between Aragorn and Frodo, when he pledged to watch over him. The way that plays out in the movie, that gets me everytime. Seeing someone selflessly carry another person or bear another person's cross, that's really powerful to me.
But then I sobbed like a baby at the end of Iron Giant, that was the most unexpected emotional response I've had to a film (I didn't even see it coming from within me). It just hit me.
I love it. Hit me again I say.

Have you read the "Chronicles of Narnia" books?
I recently read them two years ago. And I had to read each of them in one sitting, and with every single book towards the end I was overwhelmed with so much emotion (something about Aslan's appearance and redemption and inner strength/resolve and forgiveness and unconditional love) I had to put the book down.
The movie did nothing for me.
Mostly I wanted to know if you've read any of the books?

JDH: I never suspected to be emotional over LOTR but it was filled with emotional scenes; like the Grey Harbor (sp?) at the end.

Did you ever watch 'Shine'? That was another very emotional father/son movie. I have not seen the Iron Giant; I'll have to put it on the list!

I saw Shine and enjoyed it, that was some time ago. I really liked Snow Falling On Cedars, Hearts of Atlantis was good but something about it felt mechanical.

I could discuss films(story) all day.

I think it is awesome where all you've traveled. Was it for business or explore/adventure? Have you been to New Zealand? Hawaii? Machu Picchu?

Yes, I've read all the Narnia Books except the last one. I always considered the Lion, the W & the W, one of my fave books. About 15 years ago, I discovered the whole series. I forget if TheLion, W&W was the 2nd or third in the series? Yes, Aslan's part had a very strong effect!

I've primarily travelled for pleasure. Machu Picchu has been on my list for a long, long time! I've travelled only to the big Island, but was amazed at how rural it is. The closest to N.Z. was travelling to Singapore. I haven't seen Falling on Cedar or the other one. I was planning to read the book (falling..)

Snow Falling on Cedars has some absolutely beautiful cinematography and visuals.

Four of my favorite films since 2000; The Station Agent, Ordinary Heroes, 28 Days Later, and Whale Rider. There is just something so raw and true and natural and innocent in the story/acting/filming.

Would you ever consider adding a map of the world to your website, marking the places you've traveled. Have you been to Central America, like Panama? What's your favaorite place that you'd visit again at the top of a hat?

I loved The Station Agent and Whale Rider!!
The Station Agent was filled with interesting charactors, all with their own challenges. Whale rider was a beautiful film, a very powerful film! I have not seen the other two you mentioned.

I have not been to South America and would like to someday. I always wanted to go the Galapagos, Patagonia and Equador.
I loved Tuscany and most parts of Italy. Greece was pretty cool. I like rich cultures. I enjoyed northern Thailand too.

About my art background; I've been drawing and sketching since I was little. I love to doodle and sketch. I really love to do quick 5 to 30 second sketches of people in busy places. I earned a BFA in Image Production.

I've done stop-motion animation, computer animation, illustration, graphic design, filmmaking and woodworking. Some for work or freelance and some for hobby or to learn or to fill a need to create/express/communicate.

That's why I enjoy your blogspot. Everything you post here interests me and fascinates me.

JDH! In college we use to do 10 - 30 sec. sketches, 10 - 1 minute sketches, 10 - 5 minute sketches before we did any studies. Your background sounds very interesting! I never tried film making but it has always fascinated me. My teacher told us to always carry a sketch book; I wish i was faithful to that advice. When I travelled through Asia, I carried a sketchbook and still enjoy looking at it.

I haven't done as much art (of any of the above kind) as I'd like.
I recently got married and now we have two children under the age of three. I'm the stay-at-home-father who never gets out, and when I should be resting I'm on the internet or watching Lost.

Hey JDH! Maybe it's time to start your own 'stop-motion films and keep on sketching!
I started painting a few years ago, but stopped last year. I still find my mind records and analyzes color, composition and believe I'm still improving my skills even though I have not proved it on paper/canvas!! ...Talk about being optimistic! ; )

Actually, I want to make films. I spent a year in LA at the American Film Institute. I came away from that experience with a thesis script, that for right now I'm slowly working up as an illustrated/storyboarded comic book (no superheroes, just a straight-up dramatic narrative story). In the script the central character served in WWII as a teenager and kept a sketchbook journal of his experiences.

Wow! The Film institute must have been an incredible experience! Do you have any publisher in mind?

The film school was very demanding, nonstop 8am to 11pm 7 days a week. Every weekend for four days, four different groups shot short films. Everyone was required to crew.
Plus I went to classes that weren't part of my schedule of classes. I soaked up as much as I could. But I think some aspects of the film school were overrated and underwhelming.
Overall, it was a once in a lifetime learning experience and really incredible opportunity.

As far as the comic book goes, I'll probably just post the pages on the internet. I'd rather just put it out there and try to find an audience. Right now I'm just not prepared to handle a more demanding undertaking.

I've seen a cool online comic book with unique navigation. If I find the URL, I'll let you know.

As it is planned to be a 'sketchbook', you could start posting "Daily" --- so it feels like 'realtime'.
Did you ever see that guy who traded a paperclip for a house? The media was interested as the story was "progressing weekly."

Well, that is really crazy that you mention that idea. I want to do a website were I post art from a character I create. The idea is to give the illusion that it is a real person posting the art and telling his life story in a storyboard and diary format. I really want to do this idea, I've already begun writing and sketching. The character is an artist, so his use of the website is twofold - to showcase his art and to share his life's story. But there's a twist to his story, that's learned through reading his diary. And I'd tell it in real time, but it'll take a lot of prep work before hand.

Sorry for the long post. I just get excited talking about these ideas.

JDH! Your idea sounds interesting! Maybe there's a way to get some free PR out of this, to encourage viewers?
I was just reading about a charity event that will auction off a sketchbook that will feature over 50 artist's drawings. Each artist will add a sketch and then send the book to the next participating artist.
