The book is a Newbery Award Winner. I read it to my class the year it came out, and they loved it. It is pretty dark at times, but also a great adventure tale. I'm worried that the commercials look like quite a bit has been changed, but hopefully that is just for length.

I checked out the Newbery award winners and was surprised to see so many of them have been made into movies.
Typically, I find the book version is better than the movie.
