For one of Richard Attenborough's recent Life programs, they produced a time lapse of an entire glade over a growing season. It turns out that due to the variables present in outdoor photography, they had to map the glade and grow the plants inside to get the pix. By the magic of green screen special effects, the whole thing looked like it was filmed outdoors, but it was really a clever indoor/outdoor/fx piece.
I love time lapse of plants like ivy and other climbing plants. They look very snakelike (some almost look predatory) when their growth is shown in a compressed time frame.
That's very interesting about the green screen usage! It makes sense that it would be easier to control the elements within the studio. Less rain on cameras!
